Les Karens ou Karènes (autodénomination : Pwa Ka Nyaw Po), nommés Kariangs (กะเหรี่ยง) ou Yangs par les Thaïs, sont un groupe ethnique tibéto-birman de 4 à 5 millions de personnes, dont 10 % environ vivent en Thaïlande et 90 % en Birmanie. Dans ce dernier pays ils constituent en nombre la deuxième minorité ethnique après les Shan. La junte militaire birmane a été en conflit depuis 1948 avec la guérilla karen, qui l’a accusé de nettoyage ethnique ; sa direction a signé avec le nouveau gouvernement birman de 2011 des accords de cessez-le-feu le 12 janvier 2012.

Thailand is a country located at the centre of the Indochina peninsula in Southeast Asia. About 75% of the population is ethnically Thai, 14% is of Chinese origin, and 3% is ethnically Malay; the rest belong to minority groups including Mons, Khmers and various hill tribes.
