Shaolin Kung Fu (Chinese: 少林功夫; pinyin: shao lin gong fu), also called Shaolin Wushu (Chinese: 少林武术; pinyin: shao lin wu shu) or simply Shaolin quan (Chinese: 少林拳), is the oldest martial art of the world. This kung fu originated and was gradually developed in Shaolin temple, which is the most important Buddhist temple of China and is the birthplace of Chan sect of Buddhism. Shaolin kung fu is considered the biggest style among kung fu schools, so that it is claimed that virtually all the martial art techniques of the world have previously been in Shaolin kung fu. Shaolin kung fu has various styles, every style teaches its contents in one or a few routines. To learn a complete system, Shaolin monks master a number of styles each. Shaolin kung fu also has various weapons.
Besides the core style of Shaolin temple, there are other styles of kung fu that have historical and/or technical connections with Shaolin kung fu. There are many such styles, mainly in southern and northern China, that use the name Shaolin as a brand.
